Michael Stevens

Freemans Bay

Friendly, but with strong views. Loves a debate.

What issues are most important to you?

Human Rights based equity and justice, in general – and how they apply to our communities, in particular.

Are you associated with any change organisations?

I currently run the Rainbow Tick programme, designed to help make workplaces welcoming and safe for people from our communities.

In 2017, what change would you most like to see?

Greater visibility of our communities in all areas of life – TV, advertising, two women walking down the street holding hands, in Parliament. Visibility is vital for change. If we can’t see ourselves reflected in the world around us, we don’t count. And we need to be visible to the rest of the world for them to understand we exist.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I’m proud of the widespread uptake of the Rainbow Tick. Hearing from employees that it has made a difference in their workplace humbles me.

Who inspires you?

Those early activists whose work started this all. People like Magnus Hirschfeld. They’re often unknown by today’s activists, but they sowed the seed long ago.
