Since launching at TAPAC in 2015, Night of the Queer has become a cult classic and a highlight of Auckland Pride Festival. Celebratory and inclusive, the show offers a platform for some of Auckland’s most talented queer performers and emerging queer artists.
The 2020 season is presented by the dynamic dance theatre company Luck & Schooney, who co-produced the 2018 & 2019 seasons with TAPAC. Luck & Schooney are world class entertainers who are renowned for their heartfelt and sexy shows that explore serious topics in a playful, comedic way.
Night of the Queer 2020 explores, through metaphors of flowers and nature, different sexual preferences and the many ways people can enjoy sex safely and without judgement.
Bee (Hamish McGregor) is a virgin and sexually confused. He and his sidekick Bird turn to Mother Nature (Aeyla Duncan) for advice. Mother Nature introduces Bee and Bird to a rainbow of floral characters, each with wildly different sexual preferences. There’s charming, gay Red Rose (James Luck); free-loving Orange Tiger Lily (Ellyce Bisson), bisexual Purple Venus Fly Trap (Rebekkah Schoonbeek); fetishist Green Poison Ivy (Electra Shock); self-loving Yellow Daffodil; and the suave Bluebell (Colette Wilson) with equal parts yin and yang. Together they make up the rainbow, which symbolises the queer community.
